North Lakhimpur College (Autonomous) has a rich history since its establishment in 1952, and has become a renowned institution of higher education in Assam. The college's motto, "Let noble thoughts come from all directions," reflects its goal to provide a sound academic environment to equip learners with theoretical knowledge, practical exposure, and the ability to think critically.
Over the years, the college has achieved several significant milestones. In 2002, the college celebrated its Golden Jubilee, marking 50 years of service to the community. In 2008 and 2009, the college was awarded financial assistance from the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) and Department of Science and Technology (DST), respectively. In 2010, the college was conferred the status of College with Potential for Excellence (CPE) by the University Grants Commission (UGC). The following year, the college established a Biotech Hub with financial assistance from the DBT, Government of India. In 2013, the college was granted Autonomous status by the UGC, and in 2014, it was awarded CPE status (phase-II) by the UGC. The autonomous status of our institution has recently been extended by UGC till 2025-26. The Skill Hub was established and recognized by the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) in 2022, and the college was awarded ISO certification.
The college has also expanded its course offerings over the years, with the introduction of PG courses in Assamese and Electronics in 2014, followed by PG courses in Political Science, Chemistry, and Mass Communication in 2015. In 2016, the college established a digital library and provided a synthetic athletic track with support from the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India. In 2020, the college introduced a M. Phil. Program in Assamese, followed by PG programs in Physics, Zoology, English, Education, and Botany in 2021. The college also introduced a M. Phil program in Political Science in the same year.
In 2018, the college was accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with a B++ grade and 2.9 CGPA. The college established an Innovation Cell, recognized as a chapter of Innovation Cell of AICT, MHRD in 2019. In the same year, the college was also recognized to establish SWAYAM chapter of UGC and was granted FIST project by DST.
Apart from academic excellence, the college emphasizes the overall development of students by encouraging extracurricular activities, such as sports, literary, and cultural events. The college provides career counseling services to assist students with selection and placement, and the students have achieved notable success in various state and national level competitions.
