Department of Assamese

Year of Establishment: 1952

The Department of Assamese is one of the oldest and most prestigious departments of North Lakhimpur College. It has played a vital role in the academic evolution of the college and is considered one of the key contributors to its present stature. Since the post-independence period, the department has significantly contributed to the expansion of Assamese language education in the vast region of Upper Assam. Eminent scholars like Dr. Bishwanarayan Shastri once served as faculty in the department.
Over the years, the department has grown in stature and reputation, and today it is recognized as a leading department in the state.

Initially, the department was associated with Intermediate-level education. Later, it introduced undergraduate programmes. In 2014, the department began offering postgraduate (M.A.) courses. The M.Phil. programme started in 2020, followed by the Ph.D. programme in 2022. In addition, the department currently offers two certificate courses.

Students of the Assamese Department have achieved success in diverse fields and several have also ventured into self-employment. Many students have consistently qualified in national and state-level competitive exams such as NET, SLET, and JRF. Even before the college attained autonomous status, the department had recorded outstanding results in undergraduate examinations under Dibrugarh University. The department’s students also have a strong reputation for securing admission to postgraduate and research programmes in prestigious institutions.

The Faculty members have successfully completed a significant number of research projects and continue to engage actively in academic research.

The Department houses a well-maintained library and a computer-equipped lab where students receive basic computer training. It regularly publishes books and maintains an annual departmental journal along with two wall magazines.

Students of the department have consistently excelled in various literary and cultural competitions. The Assamese Department has been awarded the title of Best Department eight times consecutively during the Annual College Week celebrations of North Lakhimpur College. Many of its students have earned distinction in the intellectual landscape of Assam.

Regular activities like discussion forums, lectures, and memorial events enrich the academic environment of the department. Through field studies, educational tours, participation in events, and organizing various programmes, students receive valuable opportunities to enhance their life skills and intellectual growth.

  1. Library of the Department of Assamese

Currently, the total number of books in the departmental library is 3,326, and the number of journals is 820. The idea of establishing a departmental library emerged in the late 20th century. It was initially set up with a small collection of books under the guidance of Professor Dr. Anjan Kumar Ojah. Most of the early books were donated by students. In 2005, Dr. Dhanaranjan Kalita took charge of the library, and by that time, the collection had grown to about 150 books. Over the last 20 years, the library has grown rapidly, expanding from a single bookshelf to a fully functional library spread across two rooms. Professor Dr. Arabinda Rajkhowa has played a vital role in this development. Every year, he adds new books using various funding sources and collects donations from individuals and institutions. Notably, the families of Rani Bordoloi from Golaghat and Hemendra Kumar Gogoi from Lakhimpur donated a large number of valuable books from their personal collections at his request.
Today, the library houses a significant number of rare books and journals. Dr. Rajkhowa has also initiated the development of a digital book collection, which currently contains around 70,000 pages of books and periodicals.

The Department of Assamese has a well-equipped computer training room with ten computers to provide students with basic computer skills. Every year, departmental students receive training here. This facility has been operational since 2014 and is conducted by Dr. Arabinda Rajkhowa and Dr. Hemanta Sarmah.

  1. Student Support Fund

In 2021, under the initiative of Associate Professor Dr. Arabinda Rajkhowa, the Department established a support fund. Dr. Rajkhowa contributes Rs. 2,000 every year on his birthday, and current and former students, researchers, and faculty members also contribute on their birthdays according to their ability. These contributions are acknowledged on the department’s Facebook group and are audited annually. In 2022, alumna and noted writer Dhanada Devi contributed Rs. 2 lakh to the fund—the highest donation to date. Each year, two meritorious but economically disadvantaged students receive financial aid from this fund.

  1. Pona Devi Memorial Mother Award

Since 2020, the Department has been presenting the "Pona Devi Memorial Mother Award" to the mother of the student who secures the top position in the undergraduate final examinations. This award, initiated by alumna and writer Dhanada Devi, includes ?5,000 in cash, a certificate, and a ceremonial shawl. Dr. Arabinda Rajkhowa currently serves as the coordinator for this award.

  1. Certificate Course: Use of Assamese Language in Computers

The Department introduced a certificate course titled “Use of Assamese Language in Computers” in 2017. With 50 seats, this is the first such course offered in Assam. The course equips students with skills that have proven financially beneficial. It also generates revenue for the department. The course is coordinated by Dr. Arabinda Rajkhowa.

  1. Certificate Course: Communicative Assamese

Started in 2025, this course is designed for non-Assamese learners and expatriate Assamese individuals who wish to learn basic communicative skills in the Assamese language. The course is coordinated by Dr. Arabinda Rajkhowa.

  1. Departmental Journal

Since 2006, the department has regularly published an annual journal. Initially titled Smritir Saphura (2006–2021), it was renamed Journal of the Department of Assamese in 2021–22 to reflect its evolving scope. The journal is edited entirely by students. Dr. Arabinda Rajkhowa has been deeply involved in the publication process from the beginning.

[b] Spreading Awareness on Nature Conservation:
Awareness meetings have been conducted in various villages and rural schools to foster environmental consciousness and promote the importance of nature conservation.

[c] Creating Awareness for the Preservation of Local Folk Culture:
Efforts have been made to sensitize communities—especially in rural areas—about the significance of preserving indigenous folk traditions, with the aim of sustaining and celebrating local cultural heritage.
